An off kilter look at sales tips & tricks for telesales professionals
Issue 14: Mayflower Edition

How far are you willing to travel?

Here on your sales career pilgrimage, success is your destination.

We talked about defining success and overcoming adversity over the past two months, now let’s focus on the journey itself.

How Strongly Do You Believe?
Prior to starting off on a pilgrimage, please make sure the one you’re choosing is YOUR OWN.

In life many people pick a destination because they “should” and
Should is a dirty word!
In our off-kilter world.

Words have power and when people use “should” typically it is a concept or idea that comes from outside their own beliefs.

For a pilgrimage to be successful, the journey has to have significance for the person traveling - before taking off, make sure it does for you.

Why Do Salespeople Feel Alone?
Just because it is our pilgrimage, doesn’t mean we are alone!

The first Mayflower had about 100 passengers plus the crew on its journey.
  • Who can I band together with for my pilgrimage, as they are already going in the same direction?

The thing about pilgrims is that they must be both self-reliant and resourceful to endure setbacks along the way.

An important idea is the accurate determination of when to cross the line from self-reliance over to using outside resources.

Asking for help BEFORE becoming frustrated at the situation is the key!
  • Who is on my resource list that I can call on for assistance during my journey?
Remember on the days that you are feeling that one more step is just too difficult. It is better to catch a ride than to stand still.

  • Who believes in me - sometimes more than I believe in myself?
Make sure you have people in your life that will be there when you need words of encouragement.

What Will Help You Enjoy The Journey?
Growing up my father always reminded us to “Have Fun” whenever we left the house.

This held true if you were going to play in the neighborhood or back to college from a break.

At some point he started using this quote when ever adversity would hit:

"The difference between
an adventure and an ordeal
is attitude.
" ~ Bob Bitchin

That quote has been a valuable lesson over the years. It is after all, about how we view events not the circumstances themselves that shape our world.

Your pilgrimage doesn’t have to be an ordeal; make sure your mode of transportation makes the journey an inspiration.

Take a moment and be sure that “have fun” is part of your daily plan, put a smile on your own face and ensure your pilgrimage is also an adventure.

When Is It Time To Renegotiate With Yourself?
As you travel on your pilgrimage, you will find there are slow spots along the way.

The important thing is to recognize these times and determine:

  • Am I going the wrong way?
  • If I change lanes can I move forward more quickly?
  • Do I still want to reach the destination I set at the beginning?
Not all forward movement is in a straight line. Allow yourself the ability to renegotiate not only the path, but the destination itself as well.

Who Will You Be When The Pilgrimage Is Over?
The thing about pilgrimages is that many people come back changed by the very experience of their journey.

That is one reason that life itself can be considered one long pilgrimage (wow that is a bit philosophical let’s bring it back around to the real world).

As you are looking at your career, think of today as the “pre-pilgrimage” view.

Now ask yourself a whole bunch of how questions:
  • ... would you like it to be instead?
  • ... open to new, sometimes crazy sounding, ideas are you?
  • ... much effort will you put in?
  • ... does this fit into your goals?
  • ... will you keep going when it gets tough?
It’s your pilgrimage so there are no right or wrong answers - plus if you’re happy with the path you’re on, continue!
April showers bring May flowers...
but what do Mayflowers bring?

Pilgrims of course!

Why did I think that was so hilarious when I was a kid?

A pilgrimage is typically thought of as a journey to visit a place of significance, often traveling a considerable distance.

TeleSales Twist

Do you believe
in what you’re
calling about?

It is difficult to view a job as a career if you don’t believe in the product or service you are calling about.

Regardless of that, how can you expect the prospect to believe in “it” if you don’t?

So if you’re coming to work every day and the phone weighs a thousand pounds, ask yourself:

What do people get
working with me
and my company?

The answer to that question will be the first step on your journey to belief.
