An off kilter look at sales tips & tricks for telesales professionals
Issue 13: 1st Anniversary Edition

Some days success can only be measured by survival!

Last month we talked about creating our own success definitions!
  • Take the time: make up your own definition
  • Take the initiative: use the perspective of your own definition
  • Take the responsibility: work toward YOUR success
  • Take the controls: look inward to measure success
So you may think that using Gone-Ta-Pot is a little off kilter as a follow up.

Well - we don’t disagree, everything about UpYourTeleSales.com tends to be that way.

Come on, it isn’t like $h!t doesn’t happen OR you haven’t had a week full of Mondays.

“The most successful people are those who are good at plan B.” ~ James Yorke

You don’t have to believe me, John Mullins and Randy Komisar even wrote Getting to Plan B: Breaking Through to a Better Business Model to help entrepreneurs understand it and be successful.

So what is your plan B if the day is just going to pot?

Even if it is about walking away, taking a deep breath, and starting over tomorrow with a positive attitude - you’re further ahead than dwelling on today for the rest of the week (or beyond... you know who you are)

Hey, I know what I’m talking about - since March 22nd I’ve been trying to get this newsletter to the woman who creates the email, sets up the html version, AND sends it out to you.

Today... March 27th is unacceptable to send it over, but I’m asking her for permission anyway (she knows me well and will say no when appropriate - right Tiff?).

Hey, even if it goes out late and I miss Gone-Ta-Pot day, it makes a great story about a week that went ta pot!

“I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” ~ Michael Jordan

Instead of playing the game of what if. Let’s play what did I learn?

I’ll use myself as an example AND to be forward looking (as I always advise you to be) PLUS use the TeleSales Twist:
  • Knowing I’m going to send a newsletter out in May, June, & July what did I learn in March?

    1. Set a deadline for myself 1 ½ weeks before publish date to get everything submitted.
    2. Add it to my calendar NOW with reminders.
    3. Have at minimum my blog post titles & dates in the system BEFORE the month starts.
How about who set the expectation?
  • This one was all me, really - did you wake up on March 28th saying “gee I had better get A Chip off the Block today or UpYourTeleSales.com will have really let me down”
My first sales manager once told me that having my expectations higher than the company’s would mean that even if I didn’t reach my own goals... my employer AND my customers would still be happy!

“A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him.” ~ David Brinkley

What can you creatively do with the bricks thrown at you today?
  • Will they help you build your customer foundation? Perhaps helping you to refine your definition of the ideal customer.
  • Can those bricks be added to your behavior foundation? Driving what you choose to do each day.
  • Perhaps dodging the brick will get you further than trying to catch it. What is the harm at letting it go past you?
How can you level the ground of your success before you even use the bricks?

"It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves." ~ Edmund Hillary

When you look at a Gone-Ta-Pot day, please remember that may times our own perceptions and expectations are what is getting in our way.

One foot in front of the other is what makes us walk, lifting our knees higher helps us to climb, and our attitude is the only thing that can make the journey an adventure instead of an ordeal.

As somewhere along the way, this issue seems to have become as much about quotes as anything else, we are going to close with the author of several of my favorites;

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." ~ Thomas Edison

So if your day, your week, your month, your year - seems to have Gone-Ta-Pot; pick yourself up, brush yourself off and take Thomas Edison’s advice to try just one more time.

As we start out another year of

off kilter tips & tricks

we were researching what silly, odd facts or dates we were going to use as the blurb.

Where do you go from a first edition on April 1st called The Foolish Edition?

We are so glad to a resource which has declared the 28th of every month

If something has gone to pot, it has gone wrong and doesn’t work anymore. A day where nothing has gone right. A day full of ms-haps. A day where everything you tried to do ended up with no success.

Now THAT never happens in sales...

An UpYourTeleSales.com Reminder

Sometimes we view our day’s as Gone-Ta-Pot because our to do list, doesn’t get ta done. Before you write it off OR kick yourself, make the following observation (if it has felt really bad, as a trusted advisor to help you with this):
  • Has the craziness been all about helping my ideal customers and prospects?
  • When I re-evaluate to determine if the activity is moving me toward success (regardless of how crooked the line)?
  • What is the lesson I learned today that will help me to not repeat my mistake(s)?

TeleSales Twist

The number one thing about days that have Gone-Ta-Pot is.....
they end!
  • One bad day doesn’t ruin the week.
  • One bad week doesn’t destroy your month
  • One bad month will not extinguish a career
  • One bad career choice will not demolish your life
Tomorrow is another day!
  • Four good days do make a week.
  • Three profitable weeks will produce goal.
  • Eleven months filled with won opportunities will ignite your career.
  • A well fashioned career decision will move you toward YOUR success definition!
