everywhere I look = appearance of distraction

Crazy thing, when I was a sales leader – I though multitasking made me look busy… look important… look valuable.

When actually multitasking made me look EXTREMELY disinterested in the person who was right in front of me.

Back in 2016 I wrote a note to myself: the “appearance of distraction” vs “I’m here and present” that is going to be a blog post Then recently I saw a video clip with Simon Sinek talking about the impact of technology on relationships.

I guess the time for me to write this post is now.

Let’s talk about the “appearance of distraction”
> if you bring your phone to a meeting…
> when you don’t turn away from your monitor…
> don’t put your phone directly to voicemail…

You are showing the person you’re with that they are less important to you than the other things you have going on. It’s not a great feeling – the crazy thing is we’ve all be on the receiving end of the “appearance of distraction” yet continue to do it to others.

*sigh*

What about the impact of “I’m here and present”
> listening, REALLY listening…
> looking the person in the eye…
> putting your technology away…

People feel important, like you care, that you value them. It feels AWESOME to have someone’s undivided attention, it might not be easy to show “I’m here and present” it is important. As I think about it, important isn’t strong enough; critical is more like it.
