3 Thoughts About Habits

Too often people talk about “habit” like it is a dirty word.

I don’t know about you but I love habits! It allows me to do things without having to think. Let’s face it thinking is hard and most of us prefer not to have to. I guess that is Thought # 1

Thought #2 Habits are good when you are getting the result you want.

My Taijiquan teacher David Dolbear says ‘practice make permanent not perfect – only perfect practice makes perfect’. Good habits are those that are creating perfect permanence.

Thought #3 Habits become bad when you’re no longer getting what you want.

There are two reasons that habits could be viewed as bad. One is you no longer WANT the result you’re getting, perhaps your goals have changed. The other is the habit isn’t getting you the result anymore (getting your way as a 7 year old takes different strategies than you would use at work as an adult).
